Bontebok Calves Born

October 2024: We are delighted to announce that the Pezula Private Estate Bontebok herd has grown! After months of anticipation, three healthy calves were born, bringing the total number of Bontebok on the estate to eight. The birth of young confirms that the Bontebok have settled and are thriving in their new home following their arrival at the nature reserve in early 2023.

Bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus) are a medium-sized, chocolate brown and white antelope that occur naturally in Fynbos environments. They typically mate in February, with a gestation period of eight months. Calves are usually born between August and mid-December, often in tall grass for protection. Remarkably, within just two hours after birth the young are up and running!

We warmly welcome these three little ones and look forward to watching them grow.
